Morpeth School Music Department in Bethnal Green has won Music Department of the Year 2015 at the Education Business Awards. The award caps another hugely successful academic year for the department. This year has seen a visit from members of Grammy Award winning artist Usher's band Buddy Strong and Victor Valdez, the school’s big band “Urban Playground" perform a tour of The Hague, a collaboration with the John Bennett Big Band, students featured on the Ten Pieces Film for the BBC, a performance at the London Jazz Festival with the Corey Mwamba Trio, numerous woodwind and choir concerts with “THAMES" the Tower Hamlets Music Hub and the class band’s debut performance with Yamaha Music at the Music Education Expo at the Barbican.
More recently, the department became a London Music Champion School. With over 22 specialist music staff, they offer a large range of instrumental lessons, including steel pans, tabla and guitar, as well as a variety of extra curricular music clubs, including the Pulse percussion group, the Urban Playground wind and brass ensemble and the Music Tech Club for writing and producing. A state-of-the-art music department includes two classrooms, two music technology suites, 13 practice spaces and a recording studio with a separate control booth.
"Our forward thinking music department believes that interaction with music can help develop pupils’ competence as learners and change the way they feel, think and act,” added Peter Romhany.
With the success the department has had in recent years, it would appear the judges had no problem Making their Minds Up.
